My name is Breana Romero, and I am currently recruiting participants for an Honor’s Thesis research project entitled, “Becoming a Family: The Decisions and Support Systems of Same-Sex Parenting.” You are being contacted because you might be or know someone who is interested in participating in this study.

When public discussions of same-sex parenting arise, usually the focus is on the best interest of the children. However, little is known about the decisions and obstacles faced by same-sex couples who want to become parents, especially in the Mid-West where same-sex relationships have historically not been studied as often as those on the coasts. This study will explore the decisions that same-sex couples face when creating their families, as well as the support they receive from family, peers and larger social institutions. Finding more about the unique situation of these families has great implications for further research in this area and for professionals working with same-sex families.

I am looking to interview same-sex couples who have gone through the process of becoming parents. This interview should last no longer than an hour depending on how much information is shared, and can be scheduled at a confidential location of the participants choosing. If you have further questions about this study or if you would like to participate, please contact me at:

Breana Romero, (720) 308-5556, bcromero@huskers.unl.edu

Upon stated interest in participation, a letter of informed consent will be exchanged as well as details about where the interview will take place.

Thank you, and feel free to pass this information on to anyone who might be interested!

Sincerely,
Breana Romero
